Driven by his keen interest in ants, his journey into entomology culminated in a PhD focused on the impact of invasive ants on Round Island (Mauritius), a tiny biodiversity gem in the Indian Ocean. Using cutting-edge techniques like dietary metabarcoding and behavioral observations, Max revealed the complex trophic interactions between invasive ants and native species. Post-PhD, he collaborated with the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the Natural History Museum in London, venturing back to Mauritius to document the rich invertebrate diversity across its islands.
Richard Ladle, the ERA Chair, was invited to present at the BIODIV Annual Meeting in Lisbon this past April. The meeting, organized by students from the Doctoral Program in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution, focused on "Reinventing Science, for yourself and others," with an emphasis on bridging the gap between science and society.Ladle's talk, entitled "Can the internet reconnect societies with nature?" was delivered on April 28th and explored the potential of new technology to enhance nature-related activities and offer a rich source of data for conservation scientists and policymakers. However, Ladle also noted the potential risks of spending too much time online and becoming disconnected from the natural world.
The presentation was well-received by attendees, with many expressing interest in the ways in which technology can be leveraged to strengthen the connection between humans and nature. Ladle's work was seen as particularly relevant given the ongoing global biodiversity crisis, which [...]

Powell hosted an invited seminar in biodiversity and evolution, entitled: The effect of agricultural management on bird communities in tropical Africa: implications for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services delivered by Dr Crinan Jarrett from the Swiss Ornithological Institute. Crinan's talk has focused on the effect of agricultural management on bird communities in tropical Africa and the implications for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services. Her research is particularly relevant given the increasing demand for commodity crops, which is driving the intensification of agriculture in tropical regions. During her presentation, Crinan shared her findings from the analysis of data collected over three years in 57 cocoa farms with varying management in Cameroon. By surveying bird communities and arthropods, she investigated wildlife-driven ecosystem services and the effects of agricultural management on animal communities and productivity. Yet, ethical implications arise from the interaction between Global North and South which often consists of imbalanced practices, such as parachute science or pre-established leadership in collaborations and publications. There is a pressing need to overcome this issue by identifying those practices and discussing ways to avoid them and promote inclusive research. To move forward on this discussion, we invited three panellists. Two members from the Tropical Biology Association (TBA) – Rosie Trevelyan and Mariana Carvalho – will share with us their work in the tropics, including their strategies for inclusiveness.
The ERA Chair Richard Ladle gave a talk entitled Digital Conservation and iEcology at the Federal University of Alagoas for students and lectures from the Postgraduate Programme of Biodiversity and Conservation in the Tropics (PPG-DIBICT) on 16 of December 2022. Talk abstract: Conservation has famously been described as a ‘crisis discipline’ where decisions often have to be made on the basis of limited, incomplete or absent data. Such shortfalls are especially acute in the tropics which host the majority of the world’s biodiversity, but which contain regions where scientific capacity is extremely limited. At the same time anecdotal evidence suggests that human interactions with nature are in dramatic decline across the world with potentially negative effects for both human well-being and, more generally, support for nature conservation and the environmental agenda. In this seminar I describe how two emerging disciplines, ‘Conservation Culturomics’ and ‘iEcology’, are harnessing the [...]

The former uses data which risk marginalising rural peoples. The latter does not yet examine conservation data. In addition to the direct effects of forest disturbance on this guild, several recent high impact studies from primary rainforest in the Neotropics have shown declines in this guild, hinting at broader effects of climate change. In parallel to the patterns we are seeing in birds, recent studies show steep declines in arthropod [...]

In this seminar I describe how two emerging disciplines, [...]

Filipa Palmeirim attended and presented at ECONET2021: V Symposium on ecological networks
The V Symposium on ecological networks took place in Palma, in the island of Mallorca (Balearic Islands). It was a special and novel Symposium in the sense that it brought together, for the first time, biologists and theoretical physicists who work on network theory or use it as an approach to understand the structure and functioning of biological communities. That was an excellent opportunity to share methodologies and results and it will serve as a platform to develop joint projects in the future.
Filipa´s talk was entitled "Emerging properties of species-habitat networks in fragmented landscapes: a multi-taxa analysis", authors: Ana Filipa Palmeirim, Carine Emer, Maíra Benchimol, Danielle Storck-Tonon, Anderson S. Bueno and Carlos A.
Tropibio Researcher Filipa Palmeirim has given a talk on the Welcoming Seminar on Biodiversity and Evolution at CIBIO.
Welcome Seminar

Title: Biodiversity in fragmented landscapes: from terrestrial to insular forest patches
Habitat loss, fragmentation and subsequent degradation are primary drivers of biodiversity loss worldwide. In the tropics, hydropower development is becoming a major cause of habitat loss and fragmentation, often creating vast archipelagic landscapes, in which forest islands are isolated within a uniformly hostile open-water matrix. This talk has explored how species respond to insular habitat fragmentation as induced by dam construction. Such species responses were then be contrasted with those found for terrestrial matrix settings. Study cases on multiple taxonomic groups from the Brazilian Amazon and Southeast Asia were presented to illustrate the variety of species responses to habitat loss and fragmentation.
<img [...]

Tropibio Researcher Luke Powell and Diogo Ferreira (Tropibio PhD student) attended an integrated modelling workshop in Glasgow in October 2021
The workshop was entitled the "Bayesian integrated modelling workshop” and took place in Glasgow, from 27-29 Oct, 2021 at the University of Glasgow. The participants used Bayesian integrated modelling to pull together data from different methods for monitoring animals (e.g., camera traps and acoustic monitors), and then they "integrated" these data to get a much more precise count of how many animals are present. Luke aims to use this technique for some of the species that the Tropibio team will be monitoring in Lusophone Africa.
Precise and accurate ("robust”) estimates of abundance are extremely important for conservation ecology. But monitoring for animals often takes place using several methods at once, so integrating these to datasets can help with the robustness of estimates. For example, the global population of [...]

An international team of researchers led by Tropibio/Cibio researcher Dr Raquel Vasconcelos discovered a new species of gecko on the island of São Nicolau, archipelago of Cabo Verde. The work was published in the journal Zootaxa.
Described with the name of Hemidactylus nicolauensis, the new species – of the genus Hemidactylus – is genetically distinct from the Bouvier's gecko H. bouvieri, to which it was previously associated, and from all other closely related endemic Hemidactylus from the Cabo Verde Islands in mitochondrial and nuclear markers. It is morphologically characterized by distinct colouration and a different and diagnostic arrangement of the finger lamellae.

Female of the new gecko from the island of São Nicolau in Cabo Verde, Hemidactylus nicolauensis, deposited [...]

In this talk I [...]

Tropibio Researcher Raquel Vasconcelos approved a new project in Cabo Verde, the project is entitled Measuring the impact of the house mouse on plants in Cabo Verde using new generation sequencing and is funded by the Higher Education, Science and Technology Office, Ministry of Education, Cabo Verde (GESCT 1/2019).
The project team members are: Raquel Vasconcelos (CIBIO-BIOPOLIS), Joana Paupério (CIBIO), Evandro Lopes (UTA), Isildo Gomes (INIDA), and Maria Romeiras (ISA-UL).
Project abstract: Introduced species are one of the main threats to biodiversity, especially on islands. The introduction of mice in these systems has already led to the devastation of some habitats and the extinction of many species worldwide, also causing great losses at an economic level. However, the impacts of these micro-mammals on native and domestic plants are rarely quantified due to the lack of taxonomic knowledge and the delay in obtaining data using traditional methods of morphological [...]
