Tropibio researchers met with Eduardo Mondlane University professors e researchers to discuss collaboration

Ana Malhado, Luana Santos, and Karoline Azevedo, from the Tropibio project, met with professors e researchers from Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) in Mozambique on July 2023 to discuss potential areas of collaboration.

The first meeting was with Professor Dr. Alice Massingue, director of the Botanical Garden and curator of the herbarium at the Department of Biological Sciences at UEM. The researchers discussed the possibility of collaborating on a field course in ecology that is offered by UEM. They also discussed the development of a network for environmental conservation research in Mozambique, Brasil and Portugal.

The second meeting was convened by Professor Dr. Angélica Martins, director of the Department of Biological Sciences at UEM. Several professors and researchers in the field of environmental conservation attended the meeting. During the meeting, all participants introduced themselves, explained their research, and identified several opportunities for interaction and synergy between the Tropibio team and the UEM team.

Some of the potential areas of collaboration identified included:
  • Socio-environmental research
  • Management of conflicts with local fauna
  • Mapping and macroecology
  • Landscape ecology
  • Research in African conservation units
  • Long-term research in the marine environment
  • Development of training courses
  • Production of scientific outreach materials
The Tropibio team are excited about the potential for collaboration with UEM and believe that it will help to strengthen environmental conservation efforts in Mozambique, Brasil and Portugal.
