BIODIV PhD Researcher Explores São Tomé and Príncipe's Natural Heritage
News
Daniel Velarde, a Junior Researcher from CIBIO-BIOPOLIS, recently embarked on a research journey to São Tomé and Príncipe as part of a collaborative project between CIBIO-InBIO - BIOPOLIS and BirdLife International. From May 20 to September 18, 2022, Daniel immersed himself in research activities that aim to assess the environmental impact of invasive mammal species and associated risks of zoonosis in São Tomé.
The project, initiated with three small-scale research projects, has now expanded through the Darwin Initiative's "Build capacity and capability to regulate hunting and protect biodiversity." The focus of Daniel's study is to investigate the dietary composition of introduced mammals and the potential transmission of zoonotic viruses. This research not only establishes a close relationship between the research team and the local community of São Tomé but also provides vital ecological information for informed management decisions on the island.
During his visit, Daniel actively engaged with the people of São Tomé, exchanging knowledge and fostering collaboration. The project's outcomes hold significant ecological implications for preserving the island's rich biodiversity and updating the National Hunting Law to achieve conservation targets while meeting the needs of the local population.
Daniel's efforts extended beyond research, as he established formal contacts with various private and public institutions on the island. These included SOCFIN, DIOGO VAZ, CIAT, DFB, Associação Monte Pico, and USTP. Such interactions aim to enhance cooperation and ensure a comprehensive approach to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in São Tomé and Príncipe.
This ongoing collaboration showcases the commitment of CIBIO-BIOPOLIS and BirdLife International to protect the unique natural heritage of São Tomé and Príncipe. Further visits and activities are anticipated, supported by additional funding sources at CIBIO-BIOPOLIS, as both organizations continue their efforts to promote environmental stewardship and safeguard the island's exceptional biodiversity.
