On April 28th, 2023, Luke L. Powell hosted an invited seminar in biodiversity and evolution, entitled: The effect of agricultural management on bird communities in tropical Africa: implications for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services delivered by Dr Crinan Jarrett from the Swiss Ornithological Institute.

Crinan's talk has focused on the effect of agricultural management on bird communities in tropical Africa and the implications for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services. Her research is particularly relevant given the increasing demand for commodity crops, which is driving the intensification of agriculture in tropical regions. During her presentation, Crinan shared her findings from the analysis of data collected over three years in 57 cocoa farms with varying management in Cameroon. By surveying bird communities and arthropods, she investigated wildlife-driven ecosystem services and the effects of agricultural management on animal communities and productivity. To better understand these complex processes, Crinan used novel quantitative methods such as hierarchical modeling, data integration, and food web modeling. Her talk also introduced her current projects with the Swiss Ornithological Institute, which include further work in Afrotropical agroforestry and investigating the effects of land-use change in Sub-Saharan Africa on migratory birds during their wintering period. This seminar was an enlightening and informative presentation for researchers and students interested in biodiversity and evolution.
