Richard Ladle, the ERA Chair, was invited to present at the BIODIV Annual Meeting in Lisbon this past April. The meeting, organized by students from the Doctoral Program in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution, focused on "Reinventing Science, for yourself and others," with an emphasis on bridging the gap between science and society.
Ladle's talk, entitled "Can the internet reconnect societies with nature?" was delivered on April 28th and explored the potential of new technology to enhance nature-related activities and offer a rich source of data for conservation scientists and policymakers. However, Ladle also noted the potential risks of spending too much time online and becoming disconnected from the natural world.
The presentation was well-received by attendees, with many expressing interest in the ways in which technology can be leveraged to strengthen the connection between humans and nature. Ladle's work was seen as particularly relevant given the ongoing global biodiversity crisis, which involves not only biological extinctions but also the loss of experience and cultural knowledge.
In addition to presenting, Ladle also had the opportunity to engage with other researchers and students at the meeting, exchanging ideas and discussing potential collaborations. The BIODIV Annual Meeting provided a valuable opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange and reflection on the role of science in society, and Ladle was honored to have been invited to contribute to the discussion.
