TROPIBIO Collaborator from UTA Wins Prestigious Cabo Verde Global Scientific Prize

News

Professor Evandro Lopes, a researcher at the Institute of Engineering and Marine Sciences of the Technical University of the Atlantic (ISECMAR-UTA), has been awarded the prestigious Cabo Verde Global Scientific Prize. Organized by the Secretariat of State for Higher Education (SEES), the award honors outstanding research projects led by Cabo Verdean scientists both within the country and in the diaspora. The prize recognizes Dr. Lopes' groundbreaking project, "Biocatalog – Gestão Integrada e Interativa da Informação sobre a Distribuição de Espécies de Cabo Verde” ("Biocatalog – Integrated and Interactive Management of Information on the Distribution of Cabo Verdean Species”). This initiative organizes biodiversity data to promote equitable knowledge sharing about the archipelago’s natural heritage. Funded by the Environmental Fund, the project has significantly advanced Cabo Verde’s capacity in biodiversity informatics, enabling the country to contribute to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).

Dr. Lopes is a key collaborator of the TROPIBIO project, strengthening its presence in Cabo Verde through his research and mentorship. As an associate researcher at CIBIO, he supervises several PhD students and recently presented his work at the TiBE 2024 conference. Since 2010, he has been a cornerstone of scientific research in Cabo Verde, with numerous publications on the genetic characterization of the archipelago’s biodiversity. Currently, Dr. Lopes leads the development of Cabo Verde’s Biological Collection, a foundational step toward establishing a Natural History Museum for the country. His contributions continue to elevate Cabo Verde’s global standing in biodiversity research and conservation.
