TROPIBIO Coordinator Pedro Beja visited São Tomé for TwinLab Establishment and BirdLife Collaboration

Date: July 2021

Pedro Beja, the TROPIBIO coordinator, visited São Tomé in July 2021 with a mission to establish a TwinLab and foster collaboration with BirdLife. The trip encompassed crucial meetings with local stakeholders, site visits to potential sampling sites, and an exploration of seabird breeding sites at Sete Pedras. This expedition aimed to fortify partnerships, facilitate knowledge exchange, and advance biodiversity research and conservation efforts in São Tomé.

During his stay, Pedro Beja presented CIBIO and TROPIBIO, engaging with stakeholders at the Portuguese Cultural Centre and the University of São Tomé. The itinerary included visits to the Botanic Garden, Lobata, Roça Agostinho Neto, and potential sampling sites for invasive species and oil palm plantations. The exploration of breeding sites for seabirds at Sete Pedras further contributed to the understanding and conservation of São Tomé's unique ecological heritage. This visit served as a stepping stone towards the establishment of a TwinLab and fostering a fruitful collaboration with BirdLife in São Tomé.
