TROPIBIO early researcher students visit Guinea-Bissau to develop their research projects

News

Three Tropibio early researchers, BIODIV & TROPIBIO Ph.D. Cristian Pizzigalli, MSc students Raquel Oliveira and Francisco dos Reis Silva, took part of Tropibio expedition to Guinea Bissau in 2022 to conduct fieldwork  and develop their research projects.

Ph.D. student Cristian Pizzigalli is from Biodiv/CIBIO, Porto University programme and MSc students are from the University of Lisbon and the University of Helsinki. They conducted fieldwork activities to evaluate different biological aspects across the different habitat types available in the agricultural landscapes.

Cristian Pizzigalli collected additional data for his Ph.D. project (FCT grant 2020.05054.BD), he implemented a survey on the Rio Cacheu to collect presence and genetic data on the West African crocodile (Crocodylus suchus) on the scope of his Ph.D. project and supervised the herpetofauna surveys of the MSc student Francisco dos Reis. Francisco dos Reis Silva's thesis is focused on studying how herpetofauna assemblages respond to habitat change, while Raquel Oliveira's thesis is focused on studying small mammal diversity patterns in Guinea-Bissau and how to combine biodiversity conservation and food security. The students deployed traps and conducted surveys in different habitats, and their findings will contribute to the TROPIBIO project's research on biodiversity conservation in tropical areas.
