Workshop and Training in Guinea-Bissau Focus on Conservation Genetics and Research Methods
A workshop and research interaction on Conservation Genetics of non-human primates took place in Guinea-Bissau, led by Maria Joana Ferreira da Silva (TROPIBIO team member, CIBIO-BIOPOLIS), Ivo Colmonero-Costeira (Cardiff University, UK and CIBIO-InBIO), and Mamadu Djaló (local research assistant). The workshop, held on April 21, 2022, at Casa do Ambiente in Abu village, Formosa Island, aimed to educate local partners, guides, and students about the diversity, ecology, and behavior of Guinea-Bissau's non-human primates. Topics covered included Conservation Genetics, previous primate studies conducted in Guinea-Bissau, and Geographic Information Systems and spatial analyses.
Nineteen people attended the workshop, including 10 local school students, three local guides, the village chief (régulo), three elements from Tiniguena NGO and two elements from the management committee of the UROK community protected area. All the participants were offered lunch and a coffee break and were given support information material and a participation certificate.

Following the workshop, from April 15 to April 29, 2022, Joana Ferreira Silva trained Junior Researcher Ivo Colmonero-Costeira and two research assistants on non-invasive sampling methods for biological material and ethnographic sampling techniques. The team visited five villages in Formosa Island to collect qualitative and quantitative data on the local community's perceptions of domestic and wild animals.
Additionally, Ivo Colmonero-Costeira organized training events for local research assistants in Canhabaque and Bubaque islands from May 13 to June 19, 2022. The training sessions covered theoretical aspects of primate diversity, ecology, and behavior, as well as non-invasive sampling methods and ethnographic data collection techniques. Ongoing collaborations and discussions for further interactions are being pursued to enhance research and conservation efforts in the region.
