On June 1st, 2023, Luke L. Powell hosted a Biodiversity and Evolution seminar featuring David Montgomery from The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. The seminar titled "The Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program: Unique opportunities for biodiversity research and conservation in Equatorial Guinea" shed light on the importance of this program in one of the world's most significant biodiversity hotspots.

The Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program (BBPP) has played a pivotal role in advancing conservation biology and environmental sciences in Equatorial Guinea. For over 25 years, through a fruitful collaboration with the National University of Equatorial Guinea (UNGE), the BBPP has focused on understanding, managing, and protecting the country's natural environment, with a particular emphasis on the Gran Caldera Scientific Reserve.

The BBPP's collaborative efforts encompass three main areas. Firstly, it conducts research programs that aim to generate knowledge about Equatorial Guinea's environment while also fostering capacity building among Equatoguineans. Secondly, the program implements education initiatives that prioritize peer-to-peer knowledge exchange and skill development. Lastly, the BBPP undertakes conservation actions to strengthen the effectiveness of Equatorial Guinea's protected areas network and proposes practical solutions to reduce the supply and demand for wildmeat.

Having been successfully led by Drexel University for many years, the BBPP is now in search of a new international partner for UNGE to ensure the continuity of its invaluable relationships, infrastructure, and well-trained staff. As part of Biopolis' Gulf of Guinea Research Program, the BBPP aims to renew its focus and further enhance wildlife protection efforts while driving more effective, sustainable, and equitable research and conservation actions in Equatorial Guinea.

Luke L. Powell, as the host of the seminar, highlighted the significance of the BBPP and its potential for unlocking further advancements in biodiversity research and conservation. The presentation by David Montgomery provided insights into the BBPP's accomplishments and emphasized the urgent need for continued international collaboration to support Equatorial Guinea's conservation efforts.

The seminar, held in CIBIO-InBIO's Auditorium and available online, attracted researchers, students, and individuals passionate about biodiversity and its preservation. It served as an enlightening platform to discuss the importance of the BBPP and its potential for shaping a sustainable future for Equatorial Guinea's unique biodiversity.
