Workshop on Biodiversity, Knowledge and Ignorance delivered

News

TROPIBIO project organized the Workshop on Biodiversity, Knowledge and Ignorance: on November  16, 2022  at CIBIO and online.

Moderated by Richard Ladle, the expert panel are composed of: Joaquin Hortal, and Juliana Stropp from Department of Biogeography and Global Change, Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN-CSIC), Madrid. Joaquin Hortal presented the talk: Describing ignorance: Mapping biodiversity knowledge shortfalls, and Juliana Stropp delivered the talk: Taxonomic uncertainty and the challenge of estimating global species richness

The hybrid workshop was attended by more than 100 participants, some of which were from the TWINLAB network. The workshop on evaluating and mapping shortfalls in biodiversity knowledge with an emphasis on the role of taxonomic uncertainty was followed by a very lively discussion that focused on practical ways of capturing taxonomic change for different groups in the absence of robust data and on the barriers to effectively linking taxonomy with macroecology given the very different cultures within these disciplines. Several sub-projects were proposed that will be evaluated for feasibility in the forthcoming weeks.
