Tropibio delivered WORKSHOP COOPERAÇÃO EU-AFRICA

A virtual Workshop on EU-Africa Cooperation and Relations, as well as general information about EC funding programs, took place on June 7th, 2022. This event was co-organized by the TROPIBIO team, the UNESCO Chair Life on Land/Network of TwinLabs in Africa, and the Portuguese national funding agency for Science, Research and Technology (FCT). 

The main objective was to build essential assumptions of collaborative intent between Africa and Europe, including theoretical rationale, funding opportunities, limitations of the approach and other practical issues. The main target audiences were CIBIO-BIOPOLIS/University of Porto researchers and relevant staff, associated partners in Africa, other stakeholders in Europe-Africa collaborations, as well as researchers in general.  Read here the call for the event. 

A Live broadcast of the Workshop was aired on the CIBIO YouTube channel and the sessions were moderated by the Executive Coordinator of the CIBIO-BIOPOLIS UNESCO Chair Life on Land, Carlos Almeida Pereira. The program of the Workshop consisted of the 3 following sessions and guest speakers
  • Session 1 "Political Dialogue on Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation between Africa and Europe – Empowering Participation”. Guest speaker: André Mercier - FCT 
  • Session 2 "Horizon Europe: sustainability of the ERA-CHAIR project and opportunities for the future”. Guest speaker: Rui Munhá - FCT 
  • Session 3 "Overview for African institutions: good practices for their insertion in the European research space”. Guest speaker: Maria João Maia - FCT

A total of 107 Participants were registered for the Workshop, they were from various Portuguese institutions (e.g. CIBIO/BIOPOLIS, University of Coimbra, University of Porto, University of the Azores, Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, among others) and also coming from the African country (University of November 11, Society for Sustainability and Conservation Education for Rural Areas, Technical University of the Atlantic, Center for African Studies for Development, Cabo Verde, Federal University Of Technology, Owerri Nigeria) and from Brazil (e.g. from Botanical Gardens of the Rio de Janeiro, State University of Alagoas, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, Federal University of Alagoas). 

These participants came from various countries of residence, most participants lived in Portugal (70) but we also had residents from Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, Zambia, Spain, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria, South Africa, Ethiopia, and New Zealand.
